Wildfire Preparedness and Evacuation Guide

6 min readUpdated February 2026

Wildfires move faster than almost any other disaster, sometimes leaving only minutes to leave. Preparation is about being able to evacuate instantly and giving your home the best chance to survive. Here's how.

Create defensible space

Clear a buffer around your home so fire has less fuel to reach it. Remove dead vegetation, keep grass trimmed, move firewood and propane tanks away from the house, and clean leaves from gutters and roofs.

Pack a go-bag you can grab in seconds

  • Medications, important documents, and cash
  • N95 masks to filter smoke and ash
  • Phone chargers, water, and a change of clothes
  • Pet carriers, leashes, and pet supplies

Plan to leave early

With wildfires, early evacuation is everything. Don't wait for an official order if you feel unsafe — roads fill quickly and conditions change in minutes. Identify at least two evacuation routes in case one is cut off.

Protect your air quality

  • Keep N95 or P100 masks on hand for everyone in the household
  • Create a clean-air room with windows sealed and a HEPA filter
  • Monitor local air quality index (AQI) readings during fire season
